HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA  - The Community Action on Homelessness, together with Brunswick Street United Church, held a memorial service to remember people who were homeless who are no longer with us.  The first day of winter has been designated as a day to remember homeless people who have died.

The Memorial was held at Brunswick Street United Church at 12:00 noon, Thursday, December 21, 2000.  The general public, at large, was invited to attend the Memorial and to light a candle to remember those who have died and to hope for a brighter future for those who are at risk.

“This Memorial is an opportunity for us, as a community, to come together, on the first day of winter to remember and to understand what happens when we do not have a home - when we do not have an address - when we do not have a place that is safe, secure and affordable,” says Carol Isenor, Acting Chair of the Community Action on Homelessness.  “It is important to recognize the harsh reality of being homeless in the wintertime.”

The Community Action on Homeless and Brunswick Street United Church realize the importance of this type of memorial so that people have an opportunity to recognize and remember people in our community.  Similar remembering services took place across Canada and the United States.

The community Action on Homelessness is a steering committee of local agencies and government representatives working together to address the issue of homelessness in the greater Halifax area.
